SEL / Character Education
Required
SEL or Character Development is required by laws in North Carolina. In other words, social emotional learning or character education is required by state law to be integrated into a district’s curriculum.
North Carolina General Statutes 115C-81.60. Character education
This statute declares that each local board of education must create and implement Character Education instruction, with input from the local community. This should be incorporated into the standard curriculum.

Multi-tiered Positive Behavior Supports
Encouraged
Multi-tiered Positive Behavior Supports are encouraged by law in North Carolina. In other words, the implementation of school-wide positive behavioral supports or tiered frameworks in North Carolina school districts is encouraged, but not required.
Integrated Academic & Behavior Systems
This non-codified policy addresses the usage of positive behavioral systems of support (PBIS) with tiered interventions to highlight and reinforce behavioral expectations of students and provide interventions.

North Carolina General Statutes 115C-390.2 Discipline policies
This statute encourages school officials to use a large variety of responses to behavioral issues, such as:
- conferences,
- peer mediation,
- instruction in conflict resolution and anger management,
- academic interventions
- and more.

North Carolina General Statutes 115C-81.15. Conflict resolution and mediation models
This statute declares that the State Board of Education must develop a list of conflict resolution and mediation materials, models, and curricula that address issues including (but not limited to) responsible decision-making and nonviolent methods of conflict resolutions.

School Climate Surveys
Encouraged
School climate surveys are encouraged by laws in North Carolina. In other words, districts are encouraged by state law, regulation, or district policy to administer school climate surveys, but not required.
North Carolina General Statutes 115C-286.1. Evaluations of principals
This statute declares that local school administrators should evaluate all principals and assistant principals at least once annually. The standard and criteria for these evaluations must include the accountability measures of teacher retention, teacher support, and school climate.
The State Board may develop their own alternative evaluation, but this must be properly validated and should include standards and criteria similar to those adopted by the State Board.
